Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion - CivicWell

Who We Are

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are central to our mission and work at CivicWell. As we endeavor to support sustainable solutions and the communities that implement them, we approach each project with a DEI lens and infuse our values into our work.

Supporting local leaders in building healthy, thriving, and climate-resilient communities includes working toward equitable access to transportation options, housing, clean air and water, reliable and renewable energy, and safe public spaces. Local vision always leads our work, and we are committed to ensuring that processes are inclusive and marginalized voices are centered.

Our organization has worked with Tribesy Consulting to fully integrate our foundational commitment to DEI, and an internal DEI committee of CivicWell employees has been working diligently on developing structural and cultural assessments; DEI definitions (see below); a litmus test; and a roadmap with best practices, benchmarks, and accountability measures.

Our vision is to foster and nurture a community that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive to our staff, partners, and the communities we engage. We understand that this is a journey that requires the ongoing dedication of our leadership, staff, and partners; and CivicWell is committed to embracing this path as an organization.

Diversity

CivicWell actively seeks out and centers the contributions of multiple identities, and particularly marginalized identities.

Equity

In CivicWell, practicing equity means being committed to creating a space for dialogue. This dialogue is part of the process of expressing, recognizing, and addressing needs and barriers. Equity requires the organization to identify root causes and work to systematically eliminate barriers that prevent the full participation of communities most impacted by a legacy of oppression.

Inclusion

An inclusive space is one where a person’s whole identity is appreciated and supported; and a place where all experiences and contributions are welcomed to be expressed and will be heard. Creating this space requires the active, intentional, and ongoing practice of behaviors that promote belonging grounded in an understanding of the historical impact of exclusion upon individuals and systems.

Our “Why”

CivicWell acknowledges the historic and ongoing systemic oppression of multiple communities. We respect and learn from the work that the ancestors of those communities and previous and present activists have done to advocate for a fair and just world.

With an ongoing commitment to DEI, CivicWell believes in creating organizational spaces that promote belonging and empower vulnerability for all identities. As an organization, CivicWell intentionally approaches DEI with a commitment to supporting communities, knowing that we all benefit from a richer social fabric.
