At the state level, Caltrans has been working on ways to be more intentional about how the agency thinks about the people and communities they serve. In this webinar, hear from state leaders on innovative approaches for enhancing community engagement efforts across various Caltrans divisions. But L.A. area residents who lost their homes in the January 2025 wildfires are proving that interest is high in rebuilding in more climate-friendly ways. Now, many are finding support from a network of local, state and nonprofit organizations that come together to help in myriad ways — from financial support to design options to homeowner documentation — for people to realize those goals.

California was the first state in the nation to enact legislation aimed at enhancing tribal consultation in land-use and environmental planning. Through Senate Bill 18 (2004) and Assembly Bill 52 (2014), state leaders provided an avenue for integrating Indigenous knowledge into local land-use decisions, especially for cultural and ecological sustainability. This webinar will highlight a recent study evaluating the impact of this legislation, identify constraints, and provide practice-based recommendations to assist stakeholders across the nation to improve tribal consultations.

Transportation is a cornerstone of livability, but older adults and people with disabilities face growing transportation challenges. Losing mobility can mean losing access to health care, groceries, pharmacies, and social connections that protect their health and well-being. Without reliable alternatives, families and caregivers face greater burdens and periods of isolation and missed care increase, jeopardizing long-term health. Human Services Transportation (HST) is a critical network of accessible, often low-cost ride options designed to help older adults, people with disabilities, and residents with low incomes get to essential destinations. This webinar explores successful examples of HST and microtransit through the lens of policy solutions to advance this important transportation resource.
